Oh yes, I looked into all the usual spots, including the ever popular Costa Rica. But the main problem was many of these popular places had become unaffordable due to their popularity!
I even tried to look at areas of the U.S. that might work. Florida was out because of the expense and hurricanes. Texas was out because of the expense and tornadoes. Anywhere up north was out because of the snow. I couldn’t even consider California...I mean who can afford to retire there, anyway?
But then…I found Panama.
So I double checked my required features list. I was so excited! I actually found a place that was safe, inexpensive, not too far from the U.S (only 2 hours, in fact), a thriving 1st world country (and economy), and it was politically sound—in fact it is one of the most sound governments in all of Central and South America. Wow!
The next thing I knew, my wife, two sons and I were on our way to Panama!
We lived in Panama for two years and I still spend part of my time there. And I will tell you—Panama is everything you’ve heard and more.
However…I did make plenty of mistakes along the way. Panama is so modern; I almost forgot it’s a foreign country. And being that, things run differently there than I was used to.
